Personally i think it’s a total apple fail. It’s like the iPhone’s bigger, younger, retarded brother with a weird name.

If this is Apple’s response to netbooks, it doesn’t even come close. You can have more than one application running at the same time, say streaming Pandora while surfing the web. If this is Apple’s response to E-Readers, they missed the point. The Kindle works because it’s e-ink is easy on the eyes. Reading on the iPad’s LED screen will burn your eyes out. It would have been a very cool product if had OSX (or at least a stripped down version of it) and a camera on it, at least. We wanted to see a Mac tablet but we got an iPod Touch with a bigger screen.

Holy fuck! wasn’t the iPad supposed to bring the 2nd coming of Christ or something? No… well damn.

Like many a summer “blockbusters” the iPad had been astronomically over-hyped (can anybody say Spiderman 3?!) to the point where no matter how awesome Apple made it, it would never really surpass the expectations set. In other words the bar was set too high. Here’s what I think the iPad is missing:

    Numero uno: a new name.
Say whaaaa?!? Yeah I said it, the thing needs at new name. For one it just too damn close to iPod for my liking, plus I can already see that calls to tech support, marketing etc. will be abound with confusion. “ummm like heelooo like I cant turn on this big ipod thing like what do i doooooo!?!?…” Second, iPad seems like it was conceived by Maxipad think-tanks trying to jump on the tech bandwagon -maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to be thinking about Maxipads whilst checking up on latest douchebaggery to grace LATFH.com

    Nummer Zwei: No GPS.
If I’m stranded in Nowhere, USA and I need my coffee fix HOW THE HELL AM I GOING TO FIND MAH STARBUXXX!?!? Nuff said.

Numéro trois: wtf?! where’s the camera?
Although I think that using an iPad as a substitute for a camera would make one look like a complete douche, I was hoping for iChat have become a native app. It may just be me, but I think an iSight camera would’ve made this all that much more alluring.

    Number four: Snow Leopard.
Too much to ask for?! Not really… Or better yet how about a hybrid of the two OS?

Number five: Still no mother-fucking Flash(!!!!!!!!!).
How the hell am I supposed to watch xtube!?! LOL, not really…. I “understand” the need for apple to have a stranglehold on all aspects of the product but come one three years and you can’t get your shit together… just fucking let adobe do their thing sheesh…

number six: Can I please bypass all the stupid iPhone versions of websites?
I thought the whole point the iPhone et all, was to be able to enjoy the web in all its unfiltered glory in something that fit in your pocket (in this case maybe your backpack)…

    Number seven: no USB ports.
Which mean that if you want to hook (insert whatever here) you’re probably going to have to shell out some hard cash for one of Apple’s overpriced adapters…

Number eight: screen is 4:3 not 16:9.

    Number nine: no multi-tasking.
Running iPhone OS 3.2 means that, at least for now, the iPad is shaping up to be a “one trick at a time” kind of pony. Of course, it’s entirely possible if not probable that Apple will correct this down the line in a forthcoming version of the iPhone OS — maybe even before the tablet ships — but as it currently stands the lack of multi-tasking could be a dealbreaker for some.

Number ten: What about a lite version of iLife?
Image how cool it’b be to create music and or edit video… No? well I think so….

Number eleven: Sorry NYT et all, but the iPad isn’t going to prevent the inevitable… just saying’

    What I like:

    1. $29.99 sans contract is “relatively” cheap for unlimited data… I kind of shuddered a bit when the words ” deal with AT&T” came out of jobs’ mouth… but it’s pretty cool.

    2. unlocked

    3. the redesigned native apps look pretty damn sweet…

Obviously it’s a lot easier to criticize, so I’m sure I like more things than what I have listed. I’ll just wait for gen 2 or 3 to drop before I completely dismiss it.

The one thing I thought would be perfect would be to add the phone capability to the iPad. The concept is perfect for a smaller laptop/reader. As much time as I spend reading things on the computer, it’s not going to be much worse reading on that type of screen. I saw a presentation video that lasted a few minutes, allowing the creators to point out certain things it could do. I love the fact that there are iWork applications on it. But imagine what could be done if you could bring up a spreadsheet and have your coworker on the phone at the same time, discussing important info from business forms. A USB port, as already stated, would be perfect as well for headsets. It would be perfect to take a small unit and sit anywhere while recording a podcast on Voice Memos. I doubt there would be enough memory or other capabilities to run Garage Band and create the show. I think starting at $499 was a great move. It could have been much higher.

I’m in the big space between “It’s just a big iPod Touch. PASS!” and “F-You Steve Jobs! I wouldn’t take it if they gave me one. Viva La Kindle!”. Something like “I don’t have a need for one yet, but maybe by version 3 it might be useful.” I don’t have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, but I have an iPod. If I get to the point of wanting a book reader with web access or a replacement iPod, I’ll consider various brands and see if it’s useful.

  6. Tim Goecke says:

about the pad – Right now, the content in high school and elementary textbooks is largely determined by the largest market. California is technically the largest market, and Texas may be the second largest, but it is the state that other states look to to determine the content of their texts. That means that the texas School Board gets to determine what the plurality of kids in the US learn. That’s why evolution is barely mentioned in science texts, why Ronald Reagan gets more coverage than Martin Luther King, etc etc. So if the iPad could become standard for texts, that means that multiple editions could be published. School districts could choose between the Texas edition and reality.

Love the show, listen to it at work when I can’t take it any more. Thanks for all your hard work.

    Tim
