Great podcast (I just discovered the show a couple of weeks ago), but I disagree with you guys about the practice of outings – If it’s a closeted celebrity, like an actor or musician, then, yes, it’s a personal choice to be out or not, and people should be left alone to make that choice. I would love if they did come out, because it would make life somuch easier for so many of their fans, especially the youngers ones. Imagine if someone of the status of a Tom Cruise or a Will Smith came out. But still, it’s their choice.
However, it’s a whole different story when it’s someone in a position of actual power, like a politician or a priest. A gay man who consistently votes to defeat pro-gay policies and laws, who actively works to make life harder for his fellow homosexuals, while posing as a “family values” guy (Larry Craig, Roy Ashburn etc.)…Those men have absolutely no right to the safety of the closet, IMO. They deserve to be outed, and they deserve whatever grief and humiliation they get as result of it. Whatever ruin this brings into their lives, I think they’ve earned it.
Those are men that use the secrecy and security of the closet to enjoy the pleasures of gay life (the company of other men, and sex with other men), while catering to a voter base that will keep them in power AT THE EXPENSE of gay people’s lifes. So I don’t think those guys deserve any simpathy. Oh, and the documentary is called “Outrage”.
Best,
J.
Hey James,
I agree with you. I think if you are not hurting anyone else then it is very much a personal decision when and if you come out. (Ricky Martin for example.) However, if you are a closeted homo and hurting your own…then I say you deserve to be outed.
Thanks for listening to the show too! Great to have feedback from listeners.
Random question: why doesn’t Mike have a picture up top?
As with everything else we were just too lazy to add him. And unfortunately Mike is no longer with the show as of this writing.
